About the artist His objects moved by wind and water appear as an artistic symbiosis of technical and aesthetical forms. The constructed creations which are made out of anodized, chromium-plated, nickel-plated or even corroded materials are precisly detailed. They are aesthetic machines which demonstrate the transformation of natural energy ressources like wind and water to kinetic energy. The devolopment of one of his objects beginning with the initial
idea going on with the actual planning up to the production frequently takes several month. Having the idea of a possible movement Bernward Frank controls the technical requirements with the help of models made of wire and paper as well as with physical calculations. Even though he is keen on scientific proofs and on working with a cad program, constructing an object he rather follows his intuition. With all these given things the artist creates a combination of aesthetical forms and movements. At the first glance the movement of some of his objects seem to be accidental or even chaotic, but regarding them, one finds regularities and repetitions. Bernward Frank loves to use immanent interferences which lead the movement into another direction, turn it into the opposite, accelerate it or stop it for a short time. These surprising effects increase the attentiveness of the observer and produce tension. The results are kinetic sculptures usually with soft and noiseless extensive movements, which the other way a
question of the origin of movement, he will be confronted with the natural energies, the objects will show up as an unity of technique, nature and art.It is interesting to regard the original greek meaning or the term "aesthetic" (= perception, feeling, sentiment). With his work Bernward Frank sets up an intentional counter balance to the settled functional technology of our decade. The confrontation between technique and nature is one of the decisive aspects of his work. The technicaly constructed and artisticaly shaped objects only come to life with help of the natural energies wind and water. If it happens that the artist cannot avoid technical helps like water pumps, they are only imitations of the natural course of a river. Bernward Frank regards the term "movement" to be in close relation to the term "littel life". Life is self-supporting and independent, it renews itself out of nature.
